Nepal’s oldest political party, the Nepali Congress, has split weeks before the national elections scheduled for March 5. Founded in 1950, the party has played a central role in Nepal’s democratic transition and governance. The rupture followed months of internal tension between party president and former prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and a reformist faction led by Gagan Thapa. Thapa’s group held a convention in Kathmandu, which elected him the president of a breakaway faction. Deuba’s camp responded by expelling him and other senior leaders. Both sides have approached the Election Commission, as Nepal prepares for polls after last year’s protests and government collapse.
