Supporters of Nepal’s former royal family have staged a protest rally in central Nepal, demanding the restoration of the monarchy 17 years after it was abolished. The demonstration coincided with the birth anniversary of Prithvi Narayan Shah. The rally follows violent Gen Z-led protests last year over corruption, unemployment and governance, which left at least 77 people dead and led to the collapse of the government. As elections approach in March, thousands of young Nepalis have applied for temporary police roles, while former king Gyanendra Shah has re-entered public debate.
